London Mass Transit
CongestionCharge
A daily congestion charge, raised to £8 on July 1, 2005 for most private vehicles, must be paid by each driver who enters London's designated congestion zone. Mandated by the Greater London (Central Zone) Congestion Charging Order of 2004, the charge must be prepaid on a daily, monthly or annual basis. Compliance is monitored by cameras, which record license plate numbers and match them against a database of fee payers. Fines of £50 to £100 are assessed on violators. The congestion charge may be paid online by SMS text message, at selected retail locations, petrol stations, car parks and BT Internet kiosks, as well as by post or by telephone. The collected fees are used to fund congestion relief and mass transportation improvements in and around central London.
